Kohli Not Asked to Stay: BCCI Indicates He’s No Longer in Test Picture

As per reports, the BCCI did not request Virat Kohli to reconsider his decision on test retirement. On the contrary, Virat was told that he no longer fits India’s test team.

Since reports of Virat Kohli retiring from the longest format emerged a few days ago, his test cricket future has become the hot new topic. Following this, new developments were made stating that the BCCI urged Virat to rethink his decision. Reportedly, the board wanted Virat to stay for the five-test series against England, especially because of Rohit Sharma‘s absence.

However, a new and conflicting report by Dainik Jagran claims that Kohli wasn’t asked to reconsider his decision but was told that he does not fit in the Indian Test team due to his poor form.

Virat not urged by BCCI

“The BCCI does not request anyone. A player’s decision is his personal choice. We don’t interfere in it,” Jagran quoted a source as saying.

Another report by PTI stated that the selection committee considered handing over leadership to him in England to allow Gill some more time to groom.

“It is true that selectors did think about having Kohli as India skipper for the England series. This would have given Gill some time to grow into a leadership role, but at 25-and-a-half years of age, he is yet to hit his peak. Due to Bumrah’s fitness issues, Gill looks like the obvious choice for Ajit Agarkar‘s committee,” a BCCI source privy to development was quoted as saying by PTI.

Virat’s Test Form Decline

In what turned out to be his last test series, Virat scored only 190 runs across five matches. He scored a century in the first test and only scored 90 in the remaining 4 matches. Before that, he had an even tougher time against New Zealand, managing just 93 runs in six innings at an average of 15.50.
