Virat Kohli, one of India’s greatest cricketers, retired from Test cricket ahead of India’s tour of England in 2025. He had a remarkable career, which lasted over 15 years, and his last Test appearance was in Australia in January 2024, where he scored an incredible 190 runs. While Kohli’s career is filled with achievements, there are a few records that he didn’t manage to achieve before his retirement. Here are five significant milestones he missed out on.

1. 10,000 Runs in Test Cricket

One of the biggest milestones Kohli didn’t reach was scoring 10,000 runs in Test cricket. Kohli, who is one of the best modern-day batsmen, was very close to this milestone. At the time of his retirement, he had scored 8,874 runs in 110 Test matches. He retired 1,126 runs shy of joining the exclusive 10,000-run club in Test cricket. He would have likely joined this club had he continued playing.

2. Most Runs for India in World Test Championship (WTC)

Kohli was a crucial part of India’s journey in the World Test Championship (WTC). He scored 2,617 runs in 46 matches during the tournament. However, he missed out on becoming India’s highest run-scorer in the WTC by just 99 runs. Rohit Sharma, with 2,716 runs, holds the record for the most runs by an Indian in WTC matches. Had Kohli played in the next WTC series, he might have surpassed Rohit’s tally.

3. Most Runs Against South Africa

Virat Kohli enjoyed success against South Africa, scoring 1,408 runs in 16 Test matches. However, he fell short of breaking the record for the most runs by an Indian against South Africa, set by Sachin Tendulkar, who scored 1,741 runs in 29 matches. Kohli was 334 runs away from surpassing this record when he retired.

4. 2,000 Runs in India vs England Test Series

Kohli was exceptional in his battles against England, scoring 1,991 runs in 28 Test matches. He was just 9 runs away from becoming the fifth player in Test history to score 2,000 runs in India vs England Test matches. Kohli retired without reaching this milestone, leaving him 9 runs short of joining an elite group of players.

5. Most Centuries Against Australia

Kohli scored 9 centuries against Australia in Test cricket, making him one of the most successful players against them. However, he fell short of breaking the record for the most Test centuries against Australia, which is held by Australian legend Jack Hobbs, who scored 12 centuries against them. Kohli’s 9 centuries against Australia remain a remarkable achievement, but he could have surpassed Hobbs had he continued his career for a few more years.

While Virat Kohli may have missed out on these records, his impact on Test cricket remains immense. He is regarded as one of the best players to have ever played the game, and his career has been filled with many remarkable moments. Even though he didn’t achieve these milestones, Kohli’s legacy is secure. His aggressive batting, consistency, and leadership have redefined modern Test cricket, and his contributions will be remembered for years to come.
