All-rounder Roston Chase has been appointed as captain of the West Indies Test team, after Kraigg Brathwaite’s resignation. This development came ahead of the West Indies’ test series against Australia.
Roston Chase, who played his last test two years ago, is set to begin his captaincy in the series against Australia. This series will mark the beginning of the West Indies’ WTC cycle. He will take over the command from Kraigg Brathwaite, who stepped down from his three-year tenure in March.
Cricket West Indies posted on X, “Roston Chase has been appointed the new West Indies Test captain.
The appointment was unanimously approved by the CWI Board of Directors during its meeting held today, May 16, 2025.
Congratulations Roston – WI are rallying behind you!”
Chase’s first assignment as test captain will begin with the three-test home series against Australia in June-July. The first test will be played in his hometown, Bridgetown, from June 25.
Since his debut in 2016, Chase has played 49 matches, scoring 2265 runs, featuring 5 centuries. He also picked up 85 wickets, including a memorable 8 for 60 against England.
CWI appointed Roston Chase as captain after a detailed evaluation process, including a psychometric test. This was done to assess leadership style, behaviour, and overall suitability. The other shortlisted players included John Campbell, Tevin Imlach, Joshua Da Silva, Justin Greaves, and Jomel Warrican.
“This selection process is one of the most comprehensive and forward-thinking we have undertaken,” CWI president Kishore Shallow said. “I am deeply impressed by the professionalism, objectivity, and strategic thinking that shaped the final decision. It sets a new benchmark for leadership appointments in West Indies cricket.”
The head coach, Darren Sammy, said that he is satisfied with the new test leadership. He also requested the fans to support Chase and the team.
“I fully endorse this appointment. Our new captain has earned the respect of his peers, understands the responsibility that comes with the role, and has shown the leadership qualities we need to take this team forward. I urge fans across the region to rally behind him–we’re building something special,” Head coach Darren Sammy said.
