English players Jos Buttler, Jacob Bethell, and Will Jacks will miss the rescheduled IPL 2025 playoffs. They were named in England’s ODI squad for their home series against the West Indies.
A day after the revised schedule for the remainder of the IPL 2025 was released, the England Cricket Board (ECB) announced its ODI and T20I squad for the series against West Indies. Incidentally, the three-match ODI series is scheduled on the same dates as the IPL playoffs.
The Indian Premier League will resume on May 17 and end on June 3. Meanwhile, England is set to play their first ODI against the West Indies on May 29. The three ODI’s will be played on May 29, June 1, and June 3. Coincidentally, these are also the dates for the IPL playoffs.
The first qualifier and eliminator will be played on May 29 and May 30. The second qualifier and the final will be held on June 1 and 3.
England’s players left India when the league was suspended for a week after the rising military tensions between India and Pakistan. But they are set to return after both countries called for a ceasefire. However, the new dates have caused a dilemma for Jos Buttler (GT), Jacob Bethell (RCB), and Will Jacks (MI).
According to ESPNcricinfo, Bethell will return to India for RCB’s next two matches, but will fly back home to report for the first ODI. Although Buttler and Jacks’ plans are not confirmed, they are also expected to return briefly before going back for the ODI series.
The ECB did not give a clear answer when contacted. “No Objection Certificates have been granted based on the original IPL dates, so we’ll need to review any potential extensions, particularly in relation to any clash with the final white-ball squad,” an ECB spokesperson said when the squad was announced.
“We’re keen to support the IPL and the BCCI in getting the schedule up and running, and to facilitate players’ return should they choose to go back,” the spokesperson added. “We’ll continue to work closely with the BCCI and the IPL as the situation develops.”
There are more players likely to be affected by the clash. Sherfane Rutherford (GT) and Romario Shepherd (RCB) are part of the ODI squad. Shamar Joseph is also part of the ODI squad and the IPL.
