IPL 2024 CSK vs RCB: Virat Kohli excited for the ‘Southern Derby’ clash

Virat Kohli was delighted after catching up with MS Dhoni before the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 opening match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on Friday, March 22 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

Kohli started his international career by playing under Dhoni back in 2008. Over the years, Kohli developed immense respect for Dhoni for helping him grow as a batter and captain.

“Playing against Chennai is obviously always a special occasion, a big game, and the southern derby as they call it,” Kohli told RCB Bold Diaries before the opening game.

“It’s nice to play in front of very passionate Chennai fans. And good to catch up with MS, it’s been a while,” he added.

Virat Kohli returned to cricket after a two-month break, expressing his excitement and emotions about being back on the field. He last played a competitive match in January and was looking forward to making an impact in the IPL, especially with the T20 World Cup approaching.

Kohli emphasized his happiness and eagerness to return to normalcy after being away from the media radar for two months.

“It’s really good to be back, firstly playing cricket and just starting off the IPL,” Kohli said.

His performances in the IPL will be closely watched, particularly by the Indian selectors, considering the upcoming T20 World Cup.

Dhoni participated in the IPL last year despite a knee injury and had surgery on his knee during the break between seasons. Yesterday, he shockingly stepped down from captaincy role handing it over to Ruturaj Gaikwad. The Maharastra batter will be groomed by MS Dhoni.
