The International Cricket Council (ICC) released its highly anticipated annual rankings on Monday, and the numbers underline the sustained dominance of India and Australia in international cricket. While Australia remains the top Test side, India has claimed the number one spot in both the ODI and T20I formats.
Australia, under the leadership of Pat Cummins, continues to lead the Test rankings despite a slight dip in rating points—from 128 to 126. The reigning World Test Champions have showcased consistent performances, although their margin at the top has narrowed.
England, led by Ben Stokes, made a significant leap to second place after a strong showing in the previous season, where they won three of four Test series. Their rating jumped to 113, overtaking both South Africa (111) and India (105), who now sit at third and fourth positions, respectively.
India has reinforced its white-ball credentials with a firm grip on the top spot in both ODIs and T20 Internationals. Fresh off their ICC Champions Trophy 2025 triumph, India’s ODI rating improved from 122 to 124. New Zealand, the tournament’s runners-up, climbed to second place, surpassing their arch-rivals Australia, who now occupy the third position.
In T20Is, India continues to hold pole position thanks to a consistent run across bilateral series and multi-nation tournaments over the last year.
The 2025 ICC rankings are calculated with updated weightage: matches played since May 2024 are rated at 100%, while results from the preceding year carry a 50% value. This methodology provides a balanced reflection of recent form while maintaining a broader two-year performance window.
The latest rankings have ignited debates among fans and analysts, especially with India’s continued excellence in limited-overs formats and England’s resurgence in the red-ball arena. With more high-stakes cricket coming up later this year, the global rankings may witness more dramatic shifts in the months ahead.
