In a season that has unearthed some of the most exciting young talent in recent memory, Chennai Super Kings’ 17-year-old sensation Ayush Mhatre has drawn comparisons to Rajasthan Royals’ teenage prodigy Vaibhav Suryavanshi. But Ayush’s father, Yogesh Mhatre, has a simple message for his son: don’t try to imitate anyone—just be yourself.

Ayush was drafted into CSK as a mid-season replacement for the injured Ruturaj Gaikwad. After modest starts, he exploded with a blistering 94 off 48 balls against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, helping anchor CSK’s 214-run chase. His knock, featuring nine boundaries and five sixes, came under pressure and earned plaudits across the cricketing world.

Meanwhile, Suryavanshi, only 14 years old, became the youngest centurion in IPL history after smashing a 35-ball ton against Gujarat Titans. Rajasthan Royals had invested heavily in him at the auction, securing the youngster for INR 1.1 crore. His achievement made headlines, but it also led to an unfortunate wave of comparisons between the two prodigies.

Yogesh Mhatre, however, wants his son to steer clear of such narratives.

“Ayush and Vaibhav are very different players. I’ve told him not to get influenced by comparisons or try to match someone else’s style,” Yogesh told Mid Day. “There’s no need to chase big milestones at this stage. His journey is long, and he should focus on steady progress.”

A Word from Dhoni: Brief Yet Impactful

Following Ayush’s standout innings against RCB, he received encouragement from none other than MS Dhoni, CSK’s former captain and mentor. The legendary wicketkeeper offered a few measured words that meant the world to the youngster.

“Dhoni calmly told him, ‘Well played. Aage isi tarah achha karte rehna hai.’ It was brief, but deeply motivating. It showed Ayush that Dhoni believes in him and is backing him to take on bigger responsibilities,” Yogesh added.

Stats Speak for Themselves

In four IPL innings, Ayush has scored 163 runs at an average of 40.75 and a strike rate of 185.22. While Vaibhav’s century remains a historic feat, Ayush’s consistent performances in high-pressure scenarios have shown his temperament and maturity.

As both teens continue to light up IPL 2025, the Mhatre camp is choosing patience and focus over hype. Yogesh’s grounded advice could help Ayush Mhatre chart a path that’s uniquely his own.
