Mumbai Indians’ head coach Mahela Jayawardene has revealed the reason why Rohit Sharma has been playing as an impact player this IPL season. According to TOI, “Rohit Sharma is carrying a niggle since the Champions Trophy.”
Mahela Jayawardene has made a shocking revelation about Rohit’s fitness. This news came out ahead of Mumbai Indians’ next IPL clash against Gujarat Titans on Tuesday, May 6.
On May 5, Jayawardene revealed that MI’s former captain Rohit Sharma has been playing with an injury in the ongoing season. Reportedly, he has been carrying this injury since the Champions Trophy, and that is why he is currently playing as an Impact player for MI.
However, the Hitman playing as an Impact player has raised some flags, as he has scored 293 runs in 10 matches so far.
Many fans have expressed their disappointment with Rohit’s role as just an impact player. They voiced their concerns on social media, questioning the decision to bench him. The fans want to see Rohit return as a part of the main playing XI.
“It’s something we spoke about, but 2-3 overs doesn’t make a huge difference. However, it’s not easy when you haven’t fielded for 17 overs. That’s the thought process, but I don’t mind if my team wants me to come straight in and bat.”
Rohit began this season with a duck against CSK, followed by 8 and 13 runs against GT and KKR, respectively. He scored his first fifty of the season against CSK in the 38th fixture of the tournament, which was then followed by another amazing 70-run knock against SRH. MI’s last match was against RR, which they won by 100 runs. Rohit again scored a half-century, helping MI amass a total of 217.
