Chennai Super Kings have signed 26-year-old Urvil Patel for Rs. 30 Lakhs. They have brought him on as an injury replacement for Vansh Bedi. CSK has already been ruled out of the race for the playoffs.
CSK announced the signing of Urvil Patel, a Gujarat-based batter, on Monday, May 5. He is replacing a 22-year-old wicketkeeper-batter, Vansh Bedi, who was ruled out of the IPL due to an ankle injury.
“Chennai Super Kings (CSK) has signed Urvil Patel as a replacement for Vansh Bedi, who has been ruled out of the remainder of the tournament owing to a ligament tear in the left ankle,” the IPL said in a statement on Monday.
Urvil Patel made a name for himself last year in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy T20 tournament. After not getting picked by any team in the IPL mega-auction, Patel smashed a 28-ball hundred against Tripura in a T20 game for Gujarat.
Subsequently, he broke Rishabh Pant’s record of the fastest hundred by an Indian in the T20 format. A week later, he scored another hundred off 36 balls against Uttrakhand. He hit 315 runs in six matches in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024-25 at a strike rate of over 200.
He has played 47 T20 matches with 1162 runs at a strike rate of 170.
Urvil was part of the Gujarat Titans’ lineup in 2023, but did not get a chance to make his IPL debut. This serves as a second opportunity for him to gain a place in the playing XI and impress the fans.
CSK has been trying out young players in the 2025 season, but things have not exactly worked out for them. They gave 18-year-old Shaik Rasheed an opportunity before handing 17-year-old Ayush Mhatre his IPL debut midway through the season. CSK has also included South Africa’s young player Dewald Brevis in their team.
