India’s Test captain Shubman Gill and opener B Sai Sudharsan will not play in the second unofficial Test between England Lions and India A. The four-day game begins on June 6 in Northampton.
Earlier, both were expected to join the India A squad. The BCCI had announced that the pair would feature in the match. But the plan has changed. Now, Gill and Sudharsan will travel with the senior Test squad. The main team will land in England on June 6, the same day the match begins.
KL Rahul will join the India A squad on Tuesday. He is likely to play in the second match. This game will help him prepare for the five-Test series against England, starting June 20 in Leeds.
Rahul missed recent matches due to injury. He also missed parts of the IPL 2025. The team management wants him to get match practice. His inclusion will strengthen the India A batting line-up.
Fast bowler Akash Deep is fit again. will be available for selection. Akash Deep recovered from a back injury sustained after the Australia series. He played for Lucknow Super Giants in IPL 2025. Akash Deep was part of the squad in the first unofficial Test but didn’t play much. He bowled in short spells during breaks.
The first match, played in Canterbury, ended in a draw. The pitch was flat and slow. It gave little help to bowlers.
Several India A batters impressed in the first match. Karun Nair scored a double century at No. 3. Dhruv Jurel hit two half-centuries. Yashasvi Jaiswal, Abhimanyu Easwaran, and Nitish Kumar Reddy made quick fifties.
Reddy and Shardul Thakur bowled long spells. Reddy bowled 14.5 overs, Thakur bowled 28. Both are part of the Test squad and will aim to bowl more overs.
After the second Lions match, India will play an intra-squad game in Beckenham. It will be a closed-door match. After that, the team will travel to Leeds to prepare for the Test series.
The five-match series is a crucial challenge for the Indian team. Managing fitness and form is the top priority.
