The recreational drug in Kagiso Rabada’s case, which prompted his one-month suspension, was revealed to be ‘Cocaine’. According to the findings, the South African seamer had traces of cocaine in his system.
The results were published by South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport (SAIDS), a signatory of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). The findings were published on June 3, which confirmed the presence of Benzoylecgonine, a metabolite of cocaine, in Rabada’s system. Benzoylecgonine is formed in the liver after the ingestion of cocaine.
Rabada was tested on January 21, during the SA20. He played the entire SA20 tournament for MI Cape Town and for SA in the Champions Trophy before the results were released.
The seamer was informed of the result in late March. As a punishment, he received a one-month ban between April 1 and May 1. This kept him out of a major part of the Indian Premier League 2025.
After serving his ban, Rabada released a statement admitting to using a recreational drug on May 3. The statement was sent out through the South African Cricketers Association. At the time, he had already served his punishment and joined Gujarat Titans in the IPL. He featured in two matches for GT. Rabada then joined the South African squad for the World Test Championship final.
If the drug had been performance enhancing, he would have received a more harsh punishment. His one-month ban was based on the fact that the drug was recreational. Rabada also agreed to participate in an educational program.
