Former Indian cricketer Atul Wassan has backed MS Dhoni to return for another season of the Indian Premier League. Speaking on Dhoni’s leadership, Wassan said that there is only so much a captain can do.
The 2025 IPL season was a challenging one for the Chennai Super Kings. With their initial win against MI, CSK struggled as the season went on. Chennai finished at the bottom of the standings with just 4 wins in 14 games. They were the first team to be eliminated from the playoff race this season.
Chennai’s underwhelming performance raised questions about Dhoni’s leadership. The veteran cricketer took over mid-season, as Ruturaj Gaikwad was ruled out due to an injury. Addressing Dhoni’s captaincy, former cricketer Atul Wassan said that a captain should be judged according to the kind of team he has.
“A captain is as good as the team he gets; if I give the Zimbabwe team to Clive Lloyd, he won’t be good either. Dhoni’s captaincy should be rated based on the team he got; when he had the team in the past, we all know what he did. In my opinion, captaincy is at times overrated,” Wassan said on the latest episode of the Bails and Banter Show on OTTPlay.
Wassan believes that it is Dhoni’s love for the fans that keeps bringing him back to the game.
“Dhoni is CSK, and CSK is Dhoni. CSK could have been doing good or not alongside Dhoni, but he is still recovering money for the franchise. Dhoni knows that his best days are gone, but he is still playing and facing the criticism. It shows how much attached he is to the franchise. Otherwise, why would someone who has achieved everything put himself in this situation? And I believe he would be up next year as well, despite not being at his 100 percent,” said Wassan.
