English bowler Gus Atkinson has been ruled out of the ODI series against the West Indies. He is expected to be fit for the five-match test series against India next month.
Fast Bowler Gus Atkinson will not play England’s upcoming one-day international series against the Windies, commencing May 29. After Jofra Archer, he has become the second bowler to miss the three-match series.
Atkinson sustained a hamstring sprain during England’s one-off test victory over Zimbabwe earlier this month. He bowled a three-over spell on the final day at Trent Bridge and was seen holding his hamstring.
“He will now undergo a period of rehabilitation under the supervision of the England medical team. No replacement will be added to the ODI squad,” the ECB said in a statement.
As of now, there is no official statement from the ECB regarding Atkison’s return. However, reports in the English media suggest that he will be fit in time for the five-test series against India, commencing June 20.
Since his debut last July, the fast bowler has made his name in English cricket. He claimed 55 wickets at 22.30 in his first 12 matches. His absence would be a significant loss ahead of the test series against India.
Jofra Archer was also ruled out of the ODI series against the West Indies due to a thumb injury. Luke Wood is set to replace him in England’s squad. Archer will also be monitored, and he is likely to be available for the Test series against India.
However, Atkinson will not be replaced. Brydon Carse, Saqib Mahmood, Jamie Overton, Matthew Potts and Luke Wood are also part of the fast-bowling group in the ODI series. Any of them could play to fill Atkison’s absence.
