In a highly anticipated clash between arch-rivals India and Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2023, cricket fans were left disappointed as heavy rain interrupted the match in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The rain, which had been a subject of concern throughout the tournament, played spoilsport once again, forcing a halt in the proceedings. Today’s play has been cancelled. The match will be scheduled tomorrow with full 50 overs being played each side.
The match had started on a high note with Indian openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill providing a flying start. They punished the Pakistani bowlers with a flurry of boundaries and took the score to a promising level. Both Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill reached their respective half-centuries, putting India in a commanding position.
However, the first breakthrough for Pakistan came when Shadab Khan dismissed Rohit Sharma for a well-made 56. Shortly after, Shubman Gill also departed for 58 as Shaheen Afridi struck for Pakistan. India was at 147/2 in 24.1 overs when the rain gods intervened.
The interruption led to the pitch being covered, and despite several rounds of inspections and efforts by the ground staff to prepare the ground, the umpires were not satisfied with the playing conditions. The rain returned, and eventually, the match was called off for the day. The game is now scheduled to resume from the same point on the reserve day.
The match organizers had wisely added a reserve day for this high-stakes India-Pakistan clash after a previous group match between the two teams was also affected by rain. The cutoff time for a 20-over game was set at 12:00 AM.
Cricket fans, who had eagerly awaited this encounter, will hope for better weather conditions on the reserve day, allowing the players to showcase their skills and compete in this intense rivalry between India and Pakistan.
