Former Bangladesh spinner Aminul Islam has been appointed as the president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board. The decision was taken during the board meeting in Dhaka on Friday.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has begun to implement changes in its functioning. Aminul Islam will be taking control of the organisation as its latest president.
Aminul is a former Bangladesh captain who led the side at the 1999 World Cup and was their first Test centurion in 2000.
Aminul’s appointment came less than 24 hours after Faruque Ahmed lost his place as the sports ministry’s representative on the board of directors. This loss effectively ended his reign as board president.
The sports ministry said in a statement that the decision was taken after eight BCB directors tabled a no-confidence motion against Faruque.
It was learnt that Aminul will continue until the next BCB election, which will most likely take place in October this year. He has taken leave from his work as an ICC development manager.
“My primary goal is to hold a transparent election and create the best cricket board. That’s it. I’m not interested in running in the next election. The government asked me, and I said yes. Now it’s just a matter of following the process,” Aminul was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.
“I’ve always been involved in the development of cricket. As I’ve said before, I never had the opportunity to work in this capacity before. This is the first time I’ve received an official offer, and I didn’t say ‘no.’ Simple as that-that’s the first point,” the former batter added.
