Zainab Abbas, the well-known sports presenter and member of the ICC digital team, has spoken out for the first time after leaving India amid a social media backlash. She addressed the controversy surrounding her alleged anti-India posts in the past, emphasizing her gratitude for the opportunities she has had in her career.

Gratitude for Opportunities

In her statement on X, formerly known as Twitter, Abbas expressed her gratitude for the opportunities she has had to travel and present the sport she loves. She also mentioned that the coverage of the Cricket World Cup 2023 in India would have been an extraordinary experience for her. This statement marked her first public response since her departure from India.

Clarification on Departure

Crucially, Zainab Abbas clarified that she was neither deported from India nor asked to leave the country. This clarification came as a response to the rumours and speculations circulating on social media. The International Cricket Council (ICC) supported this clarification by stating that Zainab had left India for personal reasons and was not deported from the host country.

Zainab Abbas was in India to cover Pakistan’s three matches in the Cricket World Cup, with her last assignment being at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad during Pakistan’s World Cup opener against the Netherlands on October 6. She was originally scheduled to travel to various cities where Pakistan was set to play, including Bengaluru, Chennai, and Ahmedabad.

Notably, former Pakistan cricket players Rameez Raja and Waqar Younis were also in India as part of the commentary panel for the ODI World Cup, which commenced on October 5 and will continue until November 19.

Zainab Abbas’s statement provides clarity on her departure from India and puts to rest any speculations regarding her exit. Her professionalism and commitment to her role as a sports presenter have earned her recognition and respect in the field, making her an integral part of cricket coverage.
