India has a new Test captain. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced on May 24 that Shubman Gill will lead the Indian Test team. Gill becomes the 37th player to captain India in red-ball cricket. His first big test as captain will be the five-match Test series against England next month.

The BCCI also named Rishabh Pant as the vice-captain for the England tour. The team looks different this time as some senior players have retired recently. Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravichandran Ashwin have stepped away from Test cricket. Mohammed Shami is also missing from the squad due to fitness issues.

Yograj Singh Credits Yuvraj for Shubman’s Growth

After the announcement, former India fast bowler Yograj Singh congratulated Shubman Gill. He gave credit to his son, Yuvraj Singh, and Gill’s father for the batter’s rise in international cricket. Yograj said that Yuvraj played a key role in shaping Gill’s career, especially during the early stages.

“The credit for Shubman Gill’s performance goes to his father and Yuvraj Singh. If he is the captain today and stays in this role for a long time, Yuvraj’s guidance will be a big reason behind it,” Yograj said in a statement to India Today.

Gill trained under the supervision of his father from a young age. He also worked with Yuvraj during the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020, along with several young players from Punjab.

Big Opportunity, Bigger Responsibility

Gill has played 32 Test matches so far and scored 1,893 runs with an average of 35.06. However, his performance in overseas conditions has raised some questions. His average drops below 20 in countries like England and South Africa.

With many seniors gone, Gill now has the responsibility to lead a young team. He has recently batted at No. 3, but he might move to No. 4 in the upcoming series after Kohli’s retirement.

Cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar has advised fans and experts to give Gill a full season before judging his captaincy. As India heads to England, all eyes will be on Shubman Gill as he begins a new chapter in his career.
