Gujarat Titans won a thriller against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede. The climax full of twists saw GT head coach Ashish Nehra and finisher Rahul Tewatia getting into a heated exchange with the umpires.

What happened in the middle?

Following the second rain break when the game was being delayed, Nehra and Tewatia lashed out in frustration at the umpires. The rain stopped but the game resumed at 12.30 AM after being pushed from 12.09 AM. Parthiv Patel addressing the same, said, “The groundsmen did well to give us that kind of game. When you are behind in the Duckworth-Lewis method, you want to give yourself a chance. We knew it would be a one-over game at max, and we wanted to give ourselves a chance.”

Eventually in a thrilling finish Gujarat Titans won the match by just 1 run as Rahul Tewatia showed nerves of steel. They set a revised target of 147 runs in 19 overs via the DLS method. They needed 15 runs off the final over and Tewatia smashed a boundary off the first ball. Gerald Coetzee then hit a six and then a no-ball by Deepak Chahar helped Tewatia get two more runs.

The scores were levelled with two balls to go when Coetzee was dismissed. This meant GT needed just one run to win the match off the final delivery. A misfield by MI captain Hardik Pandya finally helped GT claim the win the three wickets. Gujarat Titans with 16 points broke MI’s match winning streak and climbed to the top of the points table.

Gill speaks of frustrating break

While speaking of the match at the end, GT captain Shubman Gill said, “It’s not easy in a T20 match, if there is such a long break to be able to come back and start the game.” Gill said. “A lot of emotions, most of them were frustrating, because at one point we were so ahead in the game.”
He concluded, “Then, I think, four overs of play, 13 runs for four wickets, it felt like one of those Test match sessions, which don’t go your way. That period was quite frustrating, but I think the universe gave us one more chance, and everything worked out well for us.”
