Amid the anticipation surrounding the forthcoming ODI World Cup scheduled from October 5 to November 19 in India, New Zealand’s stalwart fast-bowler, Trent Boult, has resounded his unwavering commitment to represent his country and play a pivotal role in propelling them to victory on the grand stage.
Boult’s reentry into New Zealand’s ODI squad for the upcoming series against England is a resounding testament to his dedication to the game and his aspiration to contribute to a historic ODI World Cup triumph. The left-arm paceman, having opted out of his central contract last year, took a temporary departure from the international arena. Now, with a renewed fervour and focus, he embarks on the journey to reignite his presence on the world stage. The memory of the past two ODI World Cup finals looms large for Boult. The heartbreak of finishing as runners-up in both 2015 and 2019, to Australia and England respectively, adds fuel to his determination to create history in India.
Speaking about his hiatus from the national team, Boult reflected on his decision to step away and explore other avenues. “It wasn’t an easy decision to make just over a year ago to move away from the New Zealand cricket bubble in a way,” he acknowledged. “I never wanted it to be about New Zealand or franchise cricket. I just respected the fact that my career is (only) so long, and just tried to make the most of my remaining years as a bowler.”
He confessed that he is “as hungry as ever to still represent the country” and highlighted his excitement to join forces with his teammates in the coming months. “I’m just thinking about hopefully lifting something pretty shiny that we were pretty close to four years ago. That’s the biggest focus,” he added with a glint of ambition.
Boult’s storied career is peppered with achievements, and he stands as New Zealand’s leading wicket-taker in ODI World Cups with 39 scalps. The upcoming tournament presents an opportunity for him to cement his legacy and etch his name in the annals of cricketing history.
During his absence from international cricket, Boult engaged himself in franchise T20 leagues across the globe. From the IPL to Australia’s BBL, his exploits with the ball garnered attention, culminating in him being the leading wicket-taker for MI New York, winning the inaugural Major League Cricket (MLC) trophy in the USA. Yet, as Boult returned to the international arena, his focus has shifted towards the ODI World Cup. “Life’s short, make the most of everything. It has been an exciting 12 months or so on the road. (I was) getting the chance to experience cricket around the world,” he shared.
