Former Australia all-rounder and ex-SRH coach Tom Moody has urged Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to drop veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin. Moody says CSK can free up almost ₹10 crore by releasing him before next year’s auction.
Ashwin joined CSK in the 2024 mega auction for ₹9.75 crore. He has played eight matches in IPL 2025. He has taken just five wickets. His spin has lacked bite. He also sat out in a few games. CSK’s management hoped for a strong performance. But Ashwin has not met expectations.
Moody noted that CSK built their team on proven stars. This strategy has served them well for years. Yet, he said Ashwin no longer fits that model. “He is not a guaranteed starter,” Moody told ESPNcricinfo. “Holding onto him at nearly ₹10 crore makes little sense.”
Moody wants CSK to have “hard conversations” with Ashwin. He believes the franchise can then use the freed-up funds wisely. CSK sits at the bottom of the table with six points from 12 games. They face Rajasthan Royals next at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.
Releasing Ashwin would boost CSK’s auction purse for IPL 2026. The extra cash could help them recruit young talent or all-rounders. Moody said this move could revive CSK’s fortunes. He added that the team needs fresh energy and balance.
CSK legends like MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja still lead the side. But the team has struggled to click as they did in past seasons. Moody argues that tough calls now can protect CSK’s winning culture. “Sometimes you must let go of familiar names,” he said. “It paves the way for new heroes.”
CSK fans will watch the final league game with keen interest. They hope the team can finish strong and build momentum for next year. If CSK secures a crucial win against Rajasthan, they may salvage pride. But decision-makers will still weigh Moody’s advice on Ashwin’s future.
