Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has officially approved the resignation of Lahiru Thirimanne from all formats of international cricket. The decision to accept Thirimanne’s resignation was reached during a recent meeting of the SLC Executive Committee.
Thirimanne, who had a notable international career, participated in 44 Test matches, accumulating a total of 2088 runs, which included three centuries, at an average of 26.43. Additionally, he featured in 127 One Day Internationals (ODIs) and 26 Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is), scoring 3194 and 291 runs respectively. Known for his left-handed batting, Thirimanne managed to secure four ODI centuries while competing in the 50-over format. He also led the Sri Lankan team in five ODIs.
Ashley De Silva, the CEO of SLC, conveyed his well wishes to Thirimanne in his future endeavors. He recognized Thirimanne’s valuable contributions to Sri Lanka Cricket across all formats and expressed that his legacy would be remembered.
Thirimanne announced his retirement decision through social media on July 22, expressing his deep gratitude for the opportunity to represent his country. He acknowledged the significance of the game in his life while making the difficult decision to step away from international cricket immediately.
A highlight of Thirimanne’s career was his involvement in the Sri Lankan squad that triumphed over India in the final of the 2014 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup held in Mirpur. Notably, he participated in three T20 World Cup tournaments during his career. He also played a pivotal role in Sri Lanka’s campaigns during the ODI World Cups in 2015 and 2019.
Although Thirimanne continued his cricket journey by participating in first-class matches in Sri Lanka’s recent season, his last appearance in the international arena was during the second Test against India in March 2022 in Bengaluru. Unfortunately, his performance during the match did not meet expectations, as he registered scores of eight and zero.
