India’s new Test captain Shubman Gill is set to hold his first press conference in his new role on June 5 in Mumbai. Joining him will be newly appointed head coach Gautam Gambhir. The duo will speak to the media ahead of India’s highly anticipated Test tour of England.

According to journalist Abhishek Tripathi, both Gill and Gambhir will depart for England after the press conference. “On June 5, new Test captain Shubman Gill and coach Gautam Gambhir will hold a joint press conference for the first time in Mumbai. It is from here that the team will leave for England,” Tripathi posted on X (formerly Twitter).

This marks a fresh chapter in Indian cricket as Gill takes over the reins following Rohit Sharma’s retirement from Test cricket after the World Test Championship (WTC) Final.

Gill to Reveal Plans for England Series

India’s tour of England will begin the new WTC cycle. The five-match Test series is crucial for India as they aim to break their 18-year drought in England. The last time India won a Test series in England was in 2007 under Rahul Dravid’s leadership.

During the press conference, Gill is expected to speak about India’s approach to the England tour. He may also reveal key decisions regarding the opening pair, team combination, and strategy in challenging English conditions. One of the biggest talking points will be the availability of star pacer Jasprit Bumrah.

Chief selector Ajit Agarkar recently confirmed that Bumrah will not play all five Tests due to workload management. The fast bowler is expected to play in three of the five matches.

India A Match Offers Early Glimpse of Test Contenders

While the main Indian squad prepares to leave after the IPL, a few key Test hopefuls are already in England playing for India A. On May 30, India A faced the England Lions at the St Lawrence Ground in Canterbury. Several players from the Test squad are participating in this match to gain early experience in English conditions.

However, the match started poorly for India A as they lost their captain Abhimanyu Easwaran early. He was dismissed for 8 runs by Josh Hull, adding pressure to the Indian top order. Easwaran, seen as a possible replacement in the main squad, missed a crucial opportunity to impress.

High Expectations from the New Leadership Pair

Shubman Gill and Gautam Gambhir bring a fresh perspective to the Indian Test setup. Gill, one of India’s brightest young talents, now has the responsibility of leading the side in one of the toughest away series in world cricket. Gambhir, known for his no-nonsense approach, is expected to instill a more aggressive and disciplined mindset in the team.

This joint appearance will be a significant moment for both as they begin a new era in Indian cricket. Fans and experts alike will watch closely to see how they lay out their vision for the future of the Test team.

India’s tour of England begins on June 20, with the first Test scheduled at Lord’s.
