Team India opener, Shubman Gill, has found himself in a difficult situation just ahead of the high-stakes clash between India and Pakistan in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. Gill, who is currently ranked as the World No. 2 ODI batter, has been battling dengue fever since the Indian cricket team’s arrival in Chennai for the tournament.

Gill’s health took a worrying turn as his platelet count dropped significantly, prompting his hospitalization in Chennai. This health setback has cast doubts over his participation in the upcoming matches, including the highly anticipated encounter against Pakistan on Saturday at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

The medical advice given to the team management was clear – avoid flying when the platelet count is low. Consequently, Gill did not accompany the team to New Delhi for their scheduled match against Afghanistan, which is set to take place at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Wednesday.

BCCI said

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) issued an official statement confirming Gill’s unavailability for the Delhi game. He was admitted to Kaveri Hospital in Chennai, where he is currently under the care of medical specialists. Dr. Rizwan Khan, the BCCI doctor traveling with the team, is overseeing Gill’s treatment.

“The India opener was admitted to Kaveri Hospital on Monday morning and is currently under the care of medical specialists at the facility. Dr. Rizwan Khan, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) doctor who has been traveling with the team, is also attending to the young opener, who missed India’s first World Cup game against Australia on Sunday,” the report added.

Since the Indian team’s arrival in Chennai on October 4, only a limited number of team members have been allowed to visit Gill. Physicians from Kaveri Hospital have been monitoring his blood tests and platelet count at the team hotel.

As Gill’s health remains a matter of concern, there is hope within the team management that he might recover in time for the clash against Pakistan, given his previous impressive performances at the Narendra Modi Stadium during his stint with the Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Reports suggest that Gill may be discharged and return to the hotel if there is a favorable improvement in his health. If his condition allows, he could potentially join the squad directly in Ahmedabad for the much-anticipated India vs. Pakistan encounter.
