Shreyas Iyer has led the Punjab Kings into the playoffs of IPL 2025, with a chance of finishing in the top two. Despite the outstanding performance, the PBKS’s captain seemed displeased during the toss on Saturday.
It is unclear whether his exclusion from the test squad for the England series played a role in his mood. Earlier on Saturday, the BCCI announced the test squad for the five-match test series in England.
As captain of the Punjab Kings, he has much to focus on beyond his exclusion from the test squad. With him as captain, PBKS have qualified for the playoffs for the first time in 11 years. However, Iyer is not content just yet, as he is aiming for a top-two finish.
“Definitely happy faces. I am not satisfied and content,” Iyer said at the toss. “We want to build momentum from here. Each and every individual is performing for the team. Job half done as of now. Important to stay in the present and seize every possible chance. Inglis and Stoinis come back into the side,” he added.
“It has been very frustrating. We started well. Then went on a roller coaster. We have played enough T20 cricket to understand. We played well in the last game for the first 17 overs. Then lost focus. We are playing for the fifth spot. We had our goals to get into the top four,” he said.
Iyer has been in impressive form in domestic cricket after losing his place in India’s test and T20 squads. On the IPL front, he has scored 435 runs in the 2025 season at an average of 48.
He continued his strong run by hitting 53 off 34 balls, including five fours and two sixes, to help PBKS put up a total of 207/8 in their 20 overs.
