Rishabh Pant is all set to make his comeback to competitive cricket during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. The dynamic wicketkeeper-batter has been sidelined since he suffered multiple injuries in a near-fatal car accident on the Delhi-Dehradun highway in December 2022.
Pant recently played a warm-up game in Alur, sparking hopes among fans that he would return for IPL 2024. On February 23, Delhi Capitals co-owner Parth Jindal confirmed that Pant would indeed return in the team’s first match of the 17th season of the IPL, where he will also lead the team. However, Jindal mentioned that Pant would play as a specialist batter in the first half of the tournament, and the team management would assess his physical condition before deciding if he could resume wicketkeeping duties for the remainder of the season.
The 26-year-old is eagerly anticipating his return to the field and expressed his excitement to meet the fans in Delhi during IPL 2024.
“The IPL is not only about cricket; it’s also about the fans that make every match memorable. With Star Sports’ ‘Star Nahi Far’ initiative, I will get to share the game’s excitement with fans directly. Can’t wait to meet the fans in Delhi during IPL 2024 and make more special memories together!” Pant said in an interview with India Today.
Delhi Capitals had a disappointing campaign last year, finishing ninth on the table with just five wins and nine losses. Pant was in the stands at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, supporting the team, while David Warner played a crucial role in his absence.
This year, the Capitals have received a major boost with the return of their regular skipper. They will kick off their IPL 2024 campaign against Punjab Kings on March 23 at the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium in Mohali, with their first few home games scheduled to be played in Visakhapatnam.
