Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting believes that left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh deserves a place in India’s playing XI for the upcoming Test series against England, beginning June 20 at Leeds.
Arshdeep, known for his T20I exploits with 99 wickets in 63 matches, has also made his mark in first-class cricket, taking 66 wickets from 21 games. Ponting, who worked closely with Arshdeep this IPL season as the head coach of Punjab Kings, shared his thoughts on The ICC Review.
“He’s skillful, knows English conditions, and that left-arm angle adds great value,” Ponting said. “I’d actually have him in India’s Test team from the start.”
Ponting was quick to congratulate Arshdeep in the team meeting once the Test squad was announced. The Australian legend believes the Duke ball and English conditions will suit Arshdeep’s swing bowling, especially considering his County stint with Kent in 2023, where he picked up 13 wickets in five games.
“He’s nearly 6’4” and gets good bounce. The ball swings in England even after 40-50 overs. That’s a big plus for someone like him,” Ponting added.
Discussing PBKS’s first playoff appearance since 2014, Ponting credited the cultural shift he introduced in his first season as coach.
“I focused on three principles: being different, daring, and dynamic. That extended beyond the players—to the entire organization,” he said.
He emphasized inclusivity, highlighting that over 100 people, not just the players, contribute to the journey. As PBKS gear up for a crucial clash against RCB, Ponting remains optimistic.
“Cricket has been great so far. The real test begins now, and I’m excited for what lies ahead.”
