The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has formally requested the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to provide written documentation from the Indian government confirming their denial of permission for the Indian cricket team’s travel to Pakistan for the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025. This move comes as a proactive measure by the PCB to address potential logistical and security concerns ahead of the high-profile tournament.
The Champions Trophy, scheduled to be held in Pakistan from February 19 to March 9, 2025, has been a point of contention between the two cricket boards due to longstanding geopolitical tensions and security issues. Historically, the BCCI has maintained that any decision regarding playing in Pakistan is contingent on government approval.
A PCB source closely involved with the tournament’s organizing committee emphasized the importance of having a clear, documented stance from the Indian government. “If the Indian government declines permission, it has to be in writing, and it is mandatory for the BCCI to provide that letter to the ICC now,” the source stated.
The PCB is pushing for clarity well in advance, considering the complexity of organizing an international tournament involving multiple teams and venues. “We are insistent that the BCCI must inform the ICC about its travel plans to Pakistan at least 5-6 months before the tournament and in writing,” the top PCB source added.
The BCCI has consistently stated that the decision to play in Pakistan is entirely a government prerogative. This stance was evident during the 2023 ODI Asia Cup, which saw India playing all its matches in Sri Lanka based on a ‘Hybrid Model’ due to similar concerns.
According to BCCI sources, there is currently no possibility of the Indian team traveling to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy. The ICC, anticipating potential complications, has allocated additional budget provisions for any contingency plans, including relocating matches if necessary.
The PCB has already submitted a draft schedule to the ICC, proposing that all of India’s games, including a possible semi-final and final, be held in Lahore. The marquee India vs. Pakistan match is scheduled for March 1, 2025.
The tournament is set to begin in Karachi on February 19 and conclude with the final in Lahore on March 9. In addition to Karachi and Lahore, some matches will also be held in Rawalpindi. A reserve day has been earmarked for the final on March 10 to account for any inclement weather.
The ICC’s annual conference in Colombo on July 19 will not include discussions on the ‘Hybrid Model’ for the tournament, but the global cricket body has taken steps to ensure preparedness for any eventualities. “The ICC Management is recommending additional costs just in case it is necessary to play some matches outside Pakistan if such a situation arises later on,” confirmed a source.
As the Champions Trophy 2025 approaches, the PCB’s request for written proof of the Indian government’s stance marks a significant step in addressing the uncertainties surrounding the tournament. The outcome of this request could set a precedent for how similar situations are handled in the future, emphasizing the need for clear communication and documented decisions in international cricket relations.
