Karnataka’s probable squad for the upcoming Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy has been unveiled, with notable inclusions and exclusions capturing the attention of cricket enthusiasts. The domestic T20 tournament, set to take place from October 16 to November 6, will run concurrently with the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, adding an extra layer of excitement for cricket aficionados.
The selection committee has recognized the exceptional performances of several players from the recently concluded Maharaja Trophy KSCA T20. Among those named in the probables are L. Manvanth Kumar, Abhilash Shetty, Luvnith Sisodia, K.L. Shrijith, and L.R. Chethan, who displayed their mettle in the T20 competition. Their consistency and contributions have earned them a coveted spot in Karnataka’s squad.
A standout returnee to the team is R. Samarth, a seasoned batter who showcased his prowess by amassing 422 runs during the Maharaja Trophy. With a striking strike-rate of 141.61, Samarth’s inclusion adds experience and depth to the squad.
However, one of the most surprising decisions involves the omission of opener Mohammed Taha. Despite being named the Player of the Tournament in the Maharaja Trophy and finishing as the second-highest run-scorer with 448 runs, Taha has not found a place in the probable list.
Chairman of the selection committee, J. Abhiram, explained the rationale behind this decision, emphasizing the need to groom young talent for the future. Abhiram stated, “Due credit should be given to Taha, but with a lot of openers around, and a number of younger cricketers emerging, we have to look ahead. If we don’t bring in youngsters now, we will not be able to build a team for the future.”
Some seasoned players, such as Shreyas Gopal, K.V. Siddharth, and Karun Nair, are notably absent from the squad. Reports suggest that they have obtained No Objection Certificates (NOCs) to play for teams outside Karnataka. This development underscores the increasing opportunities available to players beyond state borders and the changing dynamics of domestic cricket.
Additionally, the 29-year-old T20 specialist tweaker, K.C. Cariappa, has not secured a place in the probable list, raising questions about his future prospects in Karnataka cricket.
