Punjab Kings’ skipper Shreyas Iyer has been told to put his ego aside after his cheap dismissal on Thursday. PBKS lost to RCB after their batting collapsed at the New PCA Stadium in Mullanpur.
Former Australian all-rounder has advised Iyer to ‘put his ego in his pocket’ after getting dismissed off a delivery from Josh Hazlewood. PBKS came crashing down against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Qualifier 1. RCB chased the small total of 102 with ease, sealing their place in the final.
PBKS’s captain Iyer attempted to hit a big shot off a delivery from Hazlewood. But he edged the ball and got caught behind by the wicketkeeper Jitesh Sharma, falling for 2 runs off 3 balls.
Tom Moody slammed Iyer for misreading the situation and his game plan while facing Hazlewood. “The first ball he played and missed – the perfect line that you’d expect Hazlewood to bowl. He sort of played at it, but didn’t really want to play at it. And then, that third ball he got out,” said Moody.
“To me, he totally misread the game situation and his own situation. Yes, he would be aware that Hazlewood has had him a few times in the past. He would know the exact numbers,” he added.
Hazlewood has a strong record against Shreyas, dismissing him four times in T20s. The Punjab Kings captain averages only 2.75 against the Australian fast bowler. Moody highlighted that Iyer should have been more cautious against Hazlewood.
“At times, you need to put your ego in your pocket and just move forward. To me that was the perfect example of not reading the situation – trying to overcome something that has been a darkness in the past instead of just swallowing your pride and just moving on by just accumulating,” said Moody on ESPNCricinfo ‘Timeout’.
“You only had to see Hazlewood out. It was a simple thing – see him out and look to dissect the rest of their attack,” he added.
