The upcoming IPL 2024 season will witness several rule changes aimed at enhancing the on-field action. Bowlers will now be allowed to bowl two bouncers per over, a departure from the previous rule of only one permitted short ball. This change aligns the IPL rules with Test and ODI competitions, which also allow two bouncers per over.

Additionally, the IPL will maintain the rule of verifying a catch when a referral is requested for stumping, deviating from ICC regulations where the on-field umpire solely reviews stumping calls. This decision ensures fairness to the fielding side by including checks for catches before stumping decisions are finalized.

While teams will retain the privilege of two reviews, along with the ability to review wides and no balls, a notable deviation from recent ICC playing conditions will be observed as the IPL opts not to adopt the stop clock rule. This ruling, which has been made permanent in white-ball international matches, aims to ensure timely conduct of the proceedings but will not be implemented in the IPL.

IPL 2024 New Rules

  • Bowlers can now bowl two bouncers per over in IPL 2024, up from one in the previous season.
  • The IPL will maintain the rule of verifying a catch when a referral is requested for stumping, deviating from ICC regulations.
  • The stop clock rule, permanent in white-ball international matches, will not be implemented in the IPL.
  • A Smart Replay System will be used, with the TV umpire receiving direct inputs from Hawk-Eye operators.

Moreover, a Smart Replay System has been confirmed for the upcoming IPL season. The TV umpire will receive direct inputs from two operators of the Hawk-Eye system seated alongside him in the same room. This system, utilizing images captured by eight high-speed cameras positioned across the ground, aims to provide comprehensive visual data for accurate assessments, eliminating the need for the TV broadcast director as a mediator.

The IPL 2024 season will kick off on March 22 with a match between defending champions Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore at the Chepauk Stadium. This match will mark the return to competitive cricket for MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli. Dhoni last appeared in the IPL 2023 final, leading CSK to victory, while Kohli has been away from action since January.

Overall, these rule changes and innovations are expected to add an exciting dimension to the IPL 2024 season, enhancing the viewing experience for fans and ensuring a fair and competitive environment for all teams.
