The Indian Women's cricket team is set to have a new head coach before their upcoming tour of Bangladesh

The Indian Women’s cricket team is set to have a new head coach before their upcoming tour of Bangladesh, with the announcement scheduled to take place on June 30. Since the departure of former coach Ramesh Powar in December, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has yet to make a permanent appointment, relying on batting coach Hrishikesh Kanitkar to take charge during the T20 World Cup in South Africa earlier this year.

The Front Runners

According to reports, former South African national team coach Amol Muzumdar and former Indian women’s team coach Tushar Arothe are among the frontrunners for the position. Muzumdar, who also had a stint with the IPL franchise Rajasthan Royals, is reportedly in talks to become the head coach of the Baroda cricket team. However, he is expected to attend the interview in Mumbai for the Indian women’s team coaching job later this month.

Another candidate, former Durham coach Jon Lewis, has also applied for the top job. The final candidate will be named on June 30 by the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), which includes Ashok Malhotra, Jatin Paranjpe, and Sulakshana Naik. Interviews for the role are set to be conducted on Friday, as confirmed by a BCCI official.

The appointment of a new head coach for the Indian Women’s cricket team comes as the side aims to address their performance in knockout matches over the past five years. With the women’s T20 World Cup 2024 scheduled to be held in Bangladesh next year, the team will be focused on achieving success and clinching the coveted ICC trophy.

CAC is looking for a chief selector as well

In addition to the women’s head coach position, the CAC is also expected to appoint the chief selector for the Indian men’s team. Following the controversial exit of former chief selector Chetan Sharma earlier this year, the role has been vacant.

Former Indian bowler Ajit Agarkar is considered a frontrunner for the chief selector post. Interviews for the position are likely to be held on July 1, with Agarkar being viewed as the ideal candidate. The 45-year-old enjoyed a stellar career representing Team India in 26 Tests, 191 ODIs, and 4 T20s. If appointed, he would join Salil Ankola as the second selector from the West Zone on the selection committee.
