BCCI secretary Jay Shah has announced that physical tickets will be required for entry at the stadiums across the country during the 2023 World Cup, and there will be no provision for e-tickets, despite online ticket sales for the tournament. The decision comes after the lack of e-tickets at certain venues during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 led to crowds gathering outside the stadiums as fans faced difficulties in obtaining physical copies of tickets.
To address this issue, Jay Shah stated that around 7 to 8 centers will be set up to facilitate the procurement of physical ticket copies. The aim is to ensure a smooth and hassle-free experience for fans during the ODI World Cup matches.
The decision was confirmed after a meeting between the BCCI top brass and the state associations hosting matches for the 2023 ODI World Cup in New Delhi on July 27. While the possibility of having e-tickets for future bilateral series is not ruled out, the focus for the World Cup remains on physical tickets to streamline entry procedures and prevent any inconvenience to the spectators.
Jay Shah, while addressing the reporters, provided information regarding the possible rescheduling of certain matches.
“We can’t use e-tickets this time around but will ensure to have physical tickets redemption at 7-8 centers well in advance. But physical ticket needs to be retained.”
“It will get difficult to manage e-tickets at high-capacity venues like Ahmedabad and Lucknow. Our plan is to start using e-tickets more in bilaterals first and then take it to multi-nation events like the World Cup,” he added.
The delayed announcement of ticket sales for the World Cup has caused confusion and concerns among traveling fans. Rakesh Patel, the founder of Bharat Army, one of the largest fan groups of the Indian cricket team, expressed his worries about the potential logistical issues that traveling fans might encounter due to the delay in ticket sales for the tournament.
Jay Shah did, however, reveal that the ICC and BCCI will soon announce ticket sales and that the companies involved had been chosen.
“We had a word with the state associations today on the tickets. 90 percent of the associations came with the manifests and 1-2 didn’t have it ready. We have given them time till Monday to sort it out. The ICC and BCCI will then jointly announce ticket pricing and everything.
“The ticketing partner is also almost sorted,” he further added.
