Decision to Include Cricket in Los Angeles Olympics 2028 Delayed by few months

The highly anticipated decision regarding the inclusion of cricket in the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles has been temporarily postponed, according to an announcement from the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

The LA2028 Organising Committee had scheduled a meeting to explore the possibility of including cricket, along with eight other sports, in the Olympics. However, this meeting has also been delayed. The IOC Executive Board will convene to examine the sports schedule for the LA28 Olympic Games at a later date.

The IOC stated, “Due to ongoing discussions between the IOC and the (LA2028) Organising Committee, the Olympic Programme Commission has not yet had the opportunity to hold its meeting to prepare its final recommendation for the IOC Executive Board.” Consequently, the sports program for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles will be discussed during a future IOC Executive Board meeting, the date of which is yet to be determined.

Decision to be revised

As a result of this delay, the sports program for the 2028 Olympics will be revised at a later date. The decision-making meeting will be led by the IOC’s executive board, which consists of 15 members, including IOC President Thomas Bach, four vice presidents, and ten other members.

In addition to cricket, the board intended to explore the possibility of including other sports items such as flag football, karate, kickboxing, baseball-softball, lacrosse, breakdancing, squash, and motorsport.

If the board ultimately approves the inclusion of cricket, the decision will need to be fully endorsed during the IOC session in Mumbai in October. Despite the delay, the International Cricket Council (ICC) remains optimistic about cricket’s inclusion in the Olympics.

Cricket’s popularity in the United States has been on the rise, with the launch of the Major League Cricket (MLC) earlier this year. While the path to cricket’s inclusion in the Olympics has faced a delay, hopes for its debut in LA2028 remain strong.

This delay underscores the significance of cricket’s potential inclusion in the Olympic Games and highlights the need for thorough discussions and preparations to ensure a successful debut on this global sporting stage.
