The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has unveiled the remaining schedule of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, confirming that all 74 matches will be held in India, with the playoffs and final taking place in Ahmedabad and Chennai.
The Qualifier 1 and Eliminator are set to be held at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Motera on May 21 and 22 respectively. The Qualifier 2 and the final will then be played at the iconic Chepauk Stadium in Chennai on May 24 and 26, with Chennai hosting the final match of the season.
The choice of playoff venues, Ahmedabad and Chennai, aligns with expectations, especially with last year’s finalists, Chennai Super Kings and Gujarat Titans, having their home venues selected for the playoffs. The decision to host the final in Chennai adds an extra layer of excitement, as the city also hosted the inaugural match of the season.
The IPL 2024 schedule, released in two parts, saw the first 21 games confirmed earlier, with the second leg set to kick off on April 8. The defending champions, Chennai Super Kings, will start the second leg with a night game against Kolkata Knight Riders at the Chepauk.
Earlier reports had suggested the possibility of staging part of the IPL 2024 in the UAE, but BCCI secretary Jay Shah denied this, affirming that the entire league would be held in India. The BCCI has successfully navigated security concerns amidst the General Elections, avoiding overlaps with election dates in various phases while maintaining the home and away format.
The schedule also features games in Dharamsala, hosting the Punjab Kings’ home games on May 5 and May 9, and in Guwahati, where the Rajasthan Royals will play on May 15 and May 19. The final league game between Rajasthan Royals and Kolkata Knight Riders on May 19 promises to be an exciting end to the league phase.
Notably, MS Dhoni’s potential final games for Chennai Super Kings are scheduled for March 12 in Chepauk and six days later in Bengaluru, should the team fail to qualify for the playoffs. The clash between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings at the Wankhede Stadium is set for April 14, coinciding with the Tamil New Year.
After a one-day break on May 20, the playoffs will commence on May 21, culminating in the final on May 26 at the Chepauk Stadium in Chennai.
