The retention rules for the much-anticipated IPL 2025 season would most likely be announced by the Board of Control for Cricket in India by August 2024. As mentioned earlier, it’s going to be an extremely significant step, as all the franchises will know the way ahead for maintaining their nucleus of players before the mega auction slated to happen in December 2024 or January 2025.

Probable Changes to Retention Rules

The new retention rules are going to have a huge bearing on strategies. The number of players the teams can retain is currently being debated upon. Opinions have been greatly divided amongst the franchise owners. Some believe that five to seven is the right number of players to be retained, but some teams have asked for even eight.

The other franchises, however, are of the view that the auction should only use RTM cards for a more radical approach to make the event more exciting, as teams would be able to bid for players without retaining them in advance.

The RTM card, used last during the 2018 mega auction, gives teams a chance to match the highest bidder for a player they had earlier in their ranks, hence turning this into a second opportunity at retaining key players entering the auction pool. There could be a turn of events if this rule is brought back in; team owners are already at loggerheads over how many RTM cards should be made available.

It is being deliberated to increase the player salary cap from ₹100 crore to ₹120 crore, along with retention policies. This will help teams to have more leeway during bidding and hence fight more effectively to buy top talents.

Impact of Franchise Strategies

The finalized retention rules are most likely to create drastic changes in team strategies in the run-up to IPL 2025. The decisions of the BCCI will not only impact which players will continue to be part of their present teams but shall also set the tone for the upcoming auction, thereby setting the tone of the entire league.

Now, the franchise owners wait with bated breath for the rules to be announced by BCCI, as this will dictate how teams begin their preparations for the auction and roster building for the next season. Stakes are really high for both the franchises and their supporters with the ever-increasing popularity of the IPL.
