Punjab Kings‘ batsman Ashutosh Sharma, after a remarkable performance in the IPL 2024, opened up about the toughest phase of his career, highlighting a period when he felt sidelined and overlooked, leading to feelings of depression.

Ashutosh played a crucial role in Punjab Kings’ victory against Gujarat Titans, scoring 31 runs off just 17 deliveries. However, his journey to this point was filled with challenges, especially during his time with Madhya Pradesh between 2020-2022.

During this period, Ashutosh faced uncertainty about his cricketing future, particularly due to a fallout with Chandrakant Pandit, who had recently taken over as Madhya Pradesh’s head coach. Despite performing well, including scoring 90 runs off 45 balls in a trial match, Ashutosh found himself dropped from the team.

Reflecting on those difficult times, Ashutosh revealed, “I would go to the gym and retire to my hotel room. I was sinking into depression and no one told me what my fault was.”

Ashutosh further added that despite scoring three fifties in six Mushtaq Ali games in the previous season, he was not even allowed to go to the ground, which added to his depression.

“A new coach had joined Madhya Pradesh and he had strong likes and dislikes and despite scoring 90 odd in 45 balls in a trial match, I was dropped from the team,” Ashutosh said.

“I had three fifties in six Mushtaq Ali games in the previous season yet I wouldn’t even be allowed to go to the ground. I was very depressed,” the 25-year-old PBKS star further added.

However, a job offer from Railways provided a ray of hope for Ashutosh, offering him a chance to navigate through the uncertainties in his cricketing journey. His remarkable performance last year, where he equaled Yuvraj Singh’s record for the fastest T20 fifty in just 11 balls, caught the attention of Punjab Kings’ director of cricket, Sanjay Bangar, who decided to bring him on board.

Ashutosh’s journey serves as a testament to his resilience and determination to overcome challenges, and his recent performances in the IPL are a testament to his talent and potential.
