Arshdeep Singh Creates History with Five-Wicket Haul Against South Africa

Left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh etched his name in the record books by becoming the first Indian pacer to achieve a five-wicket haul in an ODI against South Africa. The historic feat occurred at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg during the first ODI on Sunday.

Arshdeep’s remarkable performance also marked him as the fourth Indian bowler to secure an ODI fifer against South Africa, joining the ranks of Sunil Joshi, Yuzvendra Chahal, and Ravindra Jadeja. Moreover, he holds the distinction of being the third Indian bowler to achieve a five-wicket haul in South Africa, following Chahal and Ashish Nehra.

The 24-year-old left-arm pacer initiated his spell by dismissing the South African top three batsmen in conditions favoring swing bowling. Arshdeep completed his five-wicket haul by dismissing Andile Phehlukwayo, South Africa’s top-scorer in the match.

Avesh Khan, the right-arm pacer, complemented Arshdeep’s performance by taking four wickets. Together, they orchestrated South Africa’s downfall to its lowest ODI total at home. This victory also marked South Africa’s tenth-lowest total in ODIs.

The Proteas, who elected to bat, faced a relentless Indian pace duo, crumbling under Arshdeep and Avesh Khan’s bowling prowess. The match witnessed a remarkable display of swing bowling, reminiscent of India’s recent ODI World Cup encounter where South Africa was bowled out for 83.
