In an astonishing turn of events, Afghanistan has recorded its first-ever One Day International (ODI) victory over Pakistan during the ICC World Cup 2023, marking a historic moment in their cricketing journey. Despite Pakistan’s valiant efforts, Afghanistan displayed a dominant performance to secure a memorable win.
Opting to bat first, Pakistan’s openers delivered a solid start, accumulating 56 runs without losing a wicket during the first powerplay. However, Imam-ul-Haq’s dismissal to a short ball marked a turning point, initiating an onslaught of spin bowling by Afghanistan. The scoring rate dipped, but Abdullah Shafique and captain Babar Azam managed to construct a valuable partnership for the second wicket.
On his World Cup debut, Afghanistan’s Noor Ahmad made a significant impact by claiming two crucial wickets in consecutive overs. Shafique and Mohammad Rizwan, who were in remarkable form, were both dismissed by the young spinner. As a result, Pakistan’s scoring rate continued to be constrained. Although Babar Azam registered a fifty, he eventually fell in an attempt to accelerate the run rate.
Nevertheless, Shadab Khan and Iftikhar Ahmed took centre stage during the final powerplay. Iftikhar’s impressive 27-ball 40, combined with Shadab’s crucial 38-ball 40, powered Pakistan to a total exceeding 280 runs.
Chasing a challenging score, Afghanistan’s openers started the innings strongly, with Hazratullah Zazai and Rahmanullah Gurbaz both achieving their respective fifties. Pakistan’s bowlers struggled to find answers as the openers established a century partnership. Shaheen Afridi managed to break the partnership during his second spell, but Rahmat Shah joined Gurbaz to maintain the momentum.
Pakistan’s Hasan Ali bowled exceptionally, putting Afghanistan under pressure for the first time as the required run rate crossed six runs per over in the 36th over. However, Afghanistan displayed composure and resilience, avoiding any panic. Captain Shahidi initially took some time to find his form, but poor deliveries from Pakistan’s spinners aided his resurgence.
Strategically, Pakistan’s captain Babar Azam chose not to attack with pace, allowing Rahmat and Shahidi to employ risk-free cricket. Consequently, Afghanistan achieved their target with an over to spare, marking a momentous win against Pakistan.
Afghanistan’s performance in the ICC World Cup 2023 has been nothing short of spectacular. Despite being considered underdogs, they have triumphed over two formidable teams – England and Pakistan – that were considered tournament favourites. The win against Pakistan represents a clinical and masterful performance.
This historic victory has solidified Afghanistan’s presence in the World Cup, demonstrating their remarkable progress and potential in the world of international cricket. The Afghanistan cricket team celebrated their first-ever win against Pakistan with a lap of honour, an occasion filled with pride and accomplishment.
