The Aditya Birla Group, a multinational conglomerate, has emerged as the front-runner to secure the title sponsorship rights for the Indian Premier League (IPL) for the 2024-28 cycle. The group has reportedly submitted a bid of Rs 500 crore per year (INR 2500 crore in total) for the title sponsorship, surpassing the reserve price of INR 350 crore for the IPL title sponsorship rights.
Tata Sons, the current IPL title sponsors for the 2022 and 2023 seasons, have the first right of refusal but will need to match the highest bid to retain the rights. The deadline to submit the bid was January 12, and the Tata Group is expected to make a decision soon on whether to match the bid.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has outlined specific criteria for the title sponsorship, including the exclusion of bids from Chinese companies and companies associated with fantasy games, sportswear, cryptocurrency, betting, and gambling.
If the Aditya Birla Group secures the IPL title sponsorship, it will be a significant boost to the organization’s brand and consumer offerings, potentially attracting a younger audience and diversifying its consumer base.
Expansion of IPL Matches Expected from 2025
In addition to the developments in title sponsorship, the BCCI is reportedly considering expanding the number of matches in the IPL from 74 in 2024 to 84 in 2025 and 2026, and further to 94 in 2027. This expansion is expected to increase the league’s brand value and attract more sponsors, further enhancing the IPL’s global appeal.
The increase in matches could potentially lead to a tenfold increase in the league’s brand value, making it even more lucrative for sponsors and stakeholders. This growth trajectory suggests a promising future for the IPL as one of the most popular and financially rewarding cricket leagues worldwide.
With the IPL set to undergo significant changes in its sponsorship and match structure, cricket fans can anticipate an even more exciting and dynamic league in the years to come.
