The BCCI has announced changes to the schedule of two Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 matches. The match between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Rajasthan Royals, originally scheduled for April 17, 2024, at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, will now take place on April 16, 2024. Similarly, the game between Gujarat Titans and Delhi Capitals, initially planned for April 16, 2024, at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, will now be played on April 17, 2024. This decision comes in response to concerns raised by local police regarding their ability to provide adequate security on April 17, which coincides with Ram Navami celebrations and the upcoming general elections. Kolkata Police communicated this issue in a letter to Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) president Snehasish Ganguly.
The rescheduling of these matches presents logistical challenges, impacting team travel plans, broadcaster arrangements, and ticketing. A senior BCCI official highlighted the complexity of these challenges. The official emphasized the need to consider multiple factors before finalizing any schedule changes. In situations where local police cannot ensure sufficient security, adjustments to the schedule become necessary.
Initially, April 18 was proposed as an alternative date for the Kolkata match. However, this option posed difficulties due to the commencement of the first phase of general elections on April 19. On this day, several regions in West Bengal, including Cooch Behar, Alipurduar, and Jalpaiguri, are scheduled for polling, making April 16 the more viable choice.
