Yash Dayal delivered a heart-pounding final over to help Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) clinch a two-run win over Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. For the second season in a row, the left-arm seamer triumphed in a last-over showdown against MS Dhoni, this time removing the CSK skipper with a precision yorker.
With 15 runs needed off the last six balls, CSK looked to Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja to finish the chase. Dayal began with three low full-tosses that yielded only singles. Then came the game-changing moment — a full delivery angled into Dhoni’s pads. The CSK veteran missed the flick, and Dayal’s confident appeal earned him an LBW decision.
“I wasn’t aiming for a wicket. My focus was on execution,” Dayal told IPL’s website. “I had done it before, and that gave me the confidence. Getting Dhoni out was just a fortunate outcome.”
Drama unfolded when Dayal overstepped on a waist-high delivery, which Shivam Dube launched for six. The third umpire declared it a no-ball, giving CSK a free hit and new hope. But Dayal held his composure, giving away just three more runs in the last three deliveries to seal the game for RCB.
The win propelled RCB to the top of the IPL 2025 points table, while CSK’s disappointing campaign hit a new low with their ninth loss. The five-time champions are now officially out of playoff contention, having struggled throughout the season with both bat and ball.
This result also marked RCB’s first-ever double over CSK in a single season — a significant achievement for the Bengaluru franchise.
Post-match, fans witnessed an emotional gesture when Virat Kohli removed his cap before shaking hands with Dhoni, prompting speculation about Dhoni’s future. IPL broadcaster Star Sports shared the moment with a caption: “One last time?” — a line that sent social media into a frenzy.
Yash Dayal, who now has 10 wickets in 11 matches at an economy rate of 9.61, continues to emerge as a clutch performer for RCB. “Even during the celebration, my mind was still in the game. I was telling the fielder at point to throw quickly. Only when it ended did it sink in,” he said.
RCB next face Lucknow Super Giants on May 9, while CSK will aim to end their season on a high note despite being out of playoff contention.
