In a mid-season squad shuffle, Punjab Kings (PBKS) have announced the signing of Australian all-rounder Mitchell Owen as a replacement for the injured Glenn Maxwell for the remainder of IPL 2025. The development came after Maxwell sustained a finger fracture, ruling him out of the tournament.

Owen to Join PBKS After PSL 2025 Commitments

Mitchell Owen, a promising 22-year-old from Tasmania, will link up with PBKS only after fulfilling his Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2025 commitments with Peshawar Zalmi, led by Babar Azam. Owen’s participation in the IPL will depend on Zalmi’s qualification scenario. If Peshawar fail to reach the playoffs, Owen could become available earlier. PBKS will benefit from his inclusion only if they qualify for the IPL playoffs.

The franchise has signed Owen for INR 3 crore, a significant sum for an uncapped player, signaling their confidence in his ability to provide powerful finishes and balance to the lineup.

Strong Domestic Form Makes Owen a Valuable Addition

Owen grabbed headlines during the last Big Bash League (BBL) season with a blistering 39-ball century for the Hobart Hurricanes. He was also the top scorer for the side, amassing 452 runs in 11 innings at an average of 45.20. With the ball, he chipped in with 3 wickets, maintaining an economy rate under 8.8.

Though his PSL 2025 campaign has been modest—101 runs and 2 wickets in 7 matches—his strike rate has neared 200, showcasing his ability to accelerate, which PBKS have missed in death overs this season.

PBKS Eye Top-Two Finish

PBKS currently sit fourth on the points table with 13 points from six wins and a rain-affected match. Their next fixture is against Lucknow Super Giants at the HPCA Stadium, Dharamsala. A victory would take them to second place, leapfrogging Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Titans.

The Shreyas Iyer-led side will hope that Owen can add the firepower needed for a strong finish as they aim for their first-ever IPL title.
