Chennai Super Kings’ IPL 2025 campaign suffered another blow as they slumped to a narrow two-run loss against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, officially crashing out of the playoff race. The defeat not only ended their chances of silverware but also triggered critical questions about MS Dhoni’s leadership and form in what could be his final IPL season.

Gilchrist Questions Dhoni’s Tactical Decisions

Former Australia captain Adam Gilchrist didn’t hold back while reviewing the match, pointing out questionable decisions during the tense final overs. He expressed surprise over Dhoni’s decision to hand the 19th over to Khaleel Ahmed, who had already conceded 32 runs in his first two overs. Romario Shepherd capitalized on the move, smashing 33 runs off that over with a flurry of sixes and boundaries.

“Tactically, I don’t know if a huge difference could have been made. But going back to Khaleel at that stage was a risky choice,” said Gilchrist on Cricbuzz. “Maybe he could have turned to Kambhoj or used Jadeja’s remaining over. It was a mixed bag.”

Signs of Decline in Dhoni’s Sharpness?

Gilchrist further questioned whether Dhoni’s once-sharp cricketing brain is beginning to fade with time. He noted that Dhoni appeared calm, as always, but wondered if the energy and mental sharpness that defined his leadership for years are still intact.

“He never shows signs of being upset. But I do wonder if the energy is still being generated internally. Whether the brain is still ticking the same way it always has, especially with the end of his career approaching,” Gilchrist remarked.

Batting Struggles Add to Dhoni’s Woes

Dhoni’s struggles with the bat only added to the criticism. He was dismissed while attempting to hit a full toss from Yash Dayal. It was a delivery he would have dispatched for six in his prime. Gilchrist highlighted this as a sign that the veteran wicketkeeper-batter might be nearing the end of his storied journey.

“Even MS… just to miss that one — it was a full toss. He never used to miss those. He used to just pick them up,” Gilchrist said.

CSK are out of contention and Dhoni’s future uncertain. Fans and experts alike wonder if they have witnessed the final appearance of one of cricket’s greatest minds in action.
