Ireland has suffered a big blow ahead of the ODI series against West Indies. Two key players, Craig Young and Curtis Campher, have been ruled out due to injuries. The three-match ODI series is set to begin on May 21 at Clontarf Cricket Club.
Young, 35, picked up a hamstring injury while playing in the Inter-Provincial Cup for North West Warriors. In his place, Jordan Neill has been called up to the squad. Campher, 26, fractured his finger while batting in the nets on May 20. Stephen Doheny has been named as his replacement.
Ireland is already missing several frontline seamers. Mark Adair, Graham Hume, Fionn Hand, Craig Young, and Curtis Campher are all out due to injury. This has left the team short of experienced pace options.
Andrew White, National Men’s Selector, admitted the injuries were untimely. “It’s not ideal to lose players just before a series. But this gives our younger players a big chance to step up,” he said.
He added, “Instead of focusing on who is not available, we’re looking at this as an opportunity. This is a real test of our bench strength against a strong West Indies team.”
