Uncapped Trio Carmichael, Mayes, and McCarthy Included in ODI Squad for West Indies Series

Ireland has announced its 14-member squad for the upcoming ODI and T20I series against West Indies. It has also named three uncapped players for the ODI series set to start on May 21.

Ireland is set to feature a few fresh faces in their upcoming home ODI and T20I series. Uncapped players – Cade Carmichael, the top order batter, and seamers Thomas Mayes and Liam McCarthy will play in the ODI series later this month.

Paul Stirling will lead both teams against the West Indies. Fast bowling all-rounder Mark Adair will miss the ODI series due to his knee injury. But he will join the Ireland squad in the T20I series.

Past Performances: Carmichael, Mayes, and McCarthy

Carmichael, Mayes and McCarthy were all part of Ireland A. They played in their 50-over tri-series against Sri Lanka A and Afghanistan A in the UAE last month.

Carmichael is in form, scoring 107 and 86 for Northern Knights in the first two games of Ireland’s ongoing List A tournament. He slammed an unbeaten 75 against Afghanistan A in the UAE.

Mayes took ten wickets in four games in the tri-series, and has six wickets in the domestic List A tournament so far. While McCarthy had seven wickets in the UAE, and has four so far in the domestic competition.

“Cade Carmichael has been in the pathway for several years now. His talent, stroke play, and resilience were on full display for the Wolves in April, and his rise over the last couple of years is a real demonstration of how consistent performances – and his ability to adapt his game to conditions – have been recognised with an International call-up,” national selector Andrew White said in a statement.

“In a similar vein, two seam bowlers – Liam McCarthy and Tom Mayes – have also been recognised for consistency and demonstrating the ability to step their game up a level at each time of asking. Both players offer something different to the squad – Mayes with his height and accuracy, while McCarthy brings a slightly different dynamic to our attack and will certainly challenge the batter’s techniques.”

The series will begin with three ODIs at Clontarf on May 21, 23, and 25. While the T20Is will be played in Bready on June 12, 14, and 15.
