Mumbai Indians are eyeing Sri Lanka’s Charith Asalanka for the IPL 2025 playoffs. They are in talks with the white-ball captain, as they will be missing a few players if they qualify in the playoffs.

Amid the military tensions between India and Pakistan, the league was suspended for a week. After a ceasefire agreement came in place, the BCCI announced the revised schedule for the tournament. However, the new dates clash with other international fixtures. Due to this, many overseas players have decided to fly back to complete their international duties.

Mumbai Looking to Sign Charith Asalanka

Five-time champions Mumbai Indians are eyeing Charith Asalanka, ahead of the resumption of the league on May 17. A few overseas players from MI’s squad will leave before the playoffs because of their other commitments.

South Africa’s Corbin Bosch and Ryan Rickelton and England’s Will Jacks are the players from MI’s squad who will not be available for the playoffs. Bosch and Rickelton are part of South Africa’s squad for the World Test Championship final. Jacks is part of the England team for ODI and T20I series against West Indies, starting from May 29.

Mumbai Indians need someone to fill the void that these players will leave. As a result, the franchise has approached Sri Lanka’s limited-overs captain to join them in the final stage of the league.

If Asalanka joins MI, he will become the third Sri Lankan cricketer to join the IPL as a replacement player. While Gujarat Titans are in talks with Kusal Mendis, Dasun Shanaka has already joined the franchise.

Mumbai Indians in IPL 2025

With 14 points in 12 matches, Mumbai Indians sit in the fourth position in the points table. They need to win both games in order to qualify for the playoffs.

Mumbai Indians will face Delhi Capitals on May 21 for their first match in the revised schedule. Their next and last league match will be against Punjab Kings on May 26.
