Sunil Gavaskar Steals the Show with Dance and Song at Wankhede’s 50th Anniversary

The iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai turned 50, and the week-long celebrations culminated in a grand evening on Sunday. The gala event witnessed the presence of legendary cricketers and dignitaries, including Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar, Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane, Ravi Shastri, and Diana Edulji. Prominent men’s and women’s players who have represented Mumbai in domestic and international cricket were also honored during the evening.

Gavaskar Breaks into Dance and Song

The highlight of the night came when Sunil Gavaskar, 75, surprised everyone by joining singer Shekhar Ravjiani on stage. The former India captain sang the evergreen hit Om Shanti Om and even broke into bhangra, delighting the audience.

The video of Gavaskar’s energetic moves quickly went viral, capturing hearts on social media. Fans praised his youthful spirit and effortless charm.

Adding to the entertainment, India captain Rohit Sharma humorously invited Shreyas Iyer to join him on stage and dance. The unexpected call-out left Iyer laughing uncontrollably, much to the amusement of the audience.

A Tribute to Wankhede Stadium

During the celebration, Ajinkya Naik, President of the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA), lauded Wankhede Stadium’s contributions to Indian cricket. “Wankhede Stadium is that shining star of Indian cricket that would never be dimmed. Its 50-year legacy is a testimony to that. As we honor those who’ve shaped this glorious journey, we also look ahead to nurturing the next 50 years of excellence in cricket,” Naik said.

Devendra Fadnavis, Maharashtra’s Chief Minister, also congratulated the MCA for its efforts in preserving the stadium’s heritage.

Iyer and Rohit Gear Up for Champions Trophy

India’s next challenge is the upcoming white-ball series against England. The series includes five T20Is starting January 22 and three ODIs from February 6.

While Rohit Sharma and Shreyas Iyer have been rested for the T20Is, both will feature in the ODI leg to prepare for the Champions Trophy in February. India will face Bangladesh in their opening game on February 20, followed by Pakistan on February 23 and New Zealand on March 2.

For Rohit, this tournament could mark the culmination of an illustrious ICC career, having been part of the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2013 Champions Trophy-winning squads.
