The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are set to face Gujarat Titans (GT) in a crucial IPL 2025 match. But before the game, a heated debate broke out between former India cricketers Sanjay Bangar, Aakash Chopra, and Suresh Raina over MS Dhoni’s role in the team.
Sanjay Bangar questioned CSK’s strategy of using MS Dhoni only as a lower-order finisher. He said that the team has had to change its batting order because Dhoni cannot play long innings anymore.
“MS Dhoni has a fixed position, but others have had to adjust around him. He can’t run much now, so they promoted Jadeja. Even Shivam Dube bats lower than usual because of this,” Bangar said on Star Sports.
Bangar stressed that Dhoni’s limited mobility has forced CSK to make several changes in their batting lineup.
Suresh Raina did not agree with Bangar’s views. He said that Dhoni is still one of the best finishers and the changes were made because top-order players like Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra were not scoring runs.
“Jadeja is batting at No.4 because the top-order failed, not because Dhoni can’t run. Look at Pathirana. He’s bowling wide after wide but still diving on the field. Are you saying MS Dhoni is not a good finisher?” Raina responded sharply.
Aakash Chopra added his perspective and pointed out that Dhoni could be used as an impact player. “Is there any other wicket-keeper batter in world cricket playing at No.8 or No.9?” he asked, highlighting how unique Dhoni’s current role is.
Dhoni has faced only 145 balls in 13 matches this season and scored 196 runs at a strike rate of 135.17. He has played more than 20 balls in an innings just once this year. In his last two games, his strike rate has dropped below 100.
Final Match of the Season
As CSK prepares for their final IPL 2025 league match, all eyes will be on Dhoni. While questions around his role continue, fans still back the former captain to deliver in crunch moments.
