Shreyas Iyer has answered his critics in emphatic fashion. Bought for a hefty INR 26.75 crore by Punjab Kings at the IPL 2025 auction, the stylish right-hander has not only justified his price tag but has also sparked a transformation that could define the franchise’s campaign. Iyer has amassed 360 runs in 10 matches at a staggering strike rate of over 180—far above his career average—and has led Punjab Kings to third place on the points table with 13 points.
Iyer’s evolution into a power-hitter has surprised many, especially considering his past role as an anchor in T20 cricket. For much of his IPL career, the Mumbai-born batter operated at a strike rate under 130, focusing on accumulation rather than acceleration. That script has now flipped.
Former Australia captain and current PBKS head coach Ricky Ponting, who previously coached Iyer at Delhi Capitals, revealed the technical adjustments that have sparked this turnaround. “He’s opened up his stance, bringing his right eye closer to the release point. That’s helped him pick the ball earlier and access deliveries closer to his body,” Ponting explained at the post-match press conference following PBKS’ win over CSK, where Iyer scored a match-winning 72 off 41 balls.
Despite his influential presence, Ponting refused to take credit for the changes. “I’ve had nothing to do with that. He’s worked it all out himself. This version of Iyer is something he’s created,” Ponting said. The Aussie legend did, however, emphasize that maintaining such a drastic shift in technique requires constant attention. “We’re still working on it every day. He’s got to ensure everything syncs well—his stance, timing, movements. It’s a significant change, and it needs refining.”
Iyer’s aggressive streak didn’t come out of nowhere. The first signs emerged during the 2023 ODI World Cup, where he displayed newfound strength and range, particularly against fast bowlers. After missing IPL 2023 due to injury, he returned stronger, seemingly having resolved earlier vulnerabilities—especially against short-pitched bowling.
This transformation has come at a crucial time for Punjab Kings, a franchise starved of success since 2014. As they prepare to shift base to Dharamsala for the final stretch of the league phase, Iyer remains their key figure—both as a captain and as a batter who can turn matches with his intent and shot-making.
With momentum firmly on their side, PBKS will host Lucknow Super Giants next. Iyer, with his form and flair, remains central to their playoff push. If his current trajectory continues, Punjab might finally break their long-standing playoff drought—and Iyer might end the season as one of IPL 2025’s most valuable acquisitions.
