Washington Sundar Hit by Brutal Delivery, Controversially Dismissed at SCG

Day 1 of the Sydney Test witnessed a painful moment for Washington Sundar as India struggled against Australia’s fiery pace attack. The incident occurred during the 66th over of India’s first innings, with Pat Cummins delivering a lethal nip-backer that left Sundar writhing in agony.

Trying to block the delivery, Sundar misjudged the ball’s trajectory, resulting in a direct hit to his box. The impact was severe, forcing him to collapse on the pitch. India’s physio rushed onto the field as the all-rounder struggled to recover from the excruciating pain. Fans and players watched anxiously as Sundar lay on the ground, clearly in discomfort.

A Controversial Exit for Sundar

Despite his brave attempt to continue, Sundar’s stay was short-lived. A delivery later, Cummins bowled a short ball that Sundar attempted to pull. Australian wicketkeeper Alex Carey immediately appealed, convinced the ball had brushed Sundar’s glove.

The Australians reviewed the decision, and technology showed a faint spike as the ball neared Sundar’s glove. Following the third umpire’s instruction, the on-field umpire overturned the original decision, ruling Sundar out for 14 runs off 30 balls. The decision sparked frustration, with Indian skipper Jasprit Bumrah openly questioning the inconsistency, referencing a similar incident in the previous game.

Bumrah Strikes Back

After Sundar’s controversial dismissal, Bumrah channelled his frustration into action. The Indian captain smashed three consecutive boundaries off Scott Boland, injecting much-needed energy into India’s innings. Bumrah’s spirited response offered a glimmer of hope as India battled to recover at 148/8.

The SCG pitch, with its lively grass cover, proved to be a pacer’s paradise. Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, and Scott Boland made life difficult for Indian batters throughout the day. With bowlers dominating, India’s hopes now rest on their own pace attack exploiting similar conditions in the second innings. Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj would be hoping to perform similar antics with the new ball.
